10. Dekh Bhai Dekh
It is one of the first and probably most loved comedy shows in the Indian television during 90’s. This show was about the flavors and little joys of life of a simple Indian family named the Diwan family. Prominent actors like Farida Jalal, Shekhar Suman, Urvashi Dholakiya, etc were the prominent actors in this comedy show. It was produced by Jaya Bachhan. Aanand Mahendroo wrote all the scripts and also directed the show. Dekh Bhai Dekh ran on DD Metro and was one of the highest watched show from 1993 – 1997.
9. Byomkesh Bakshi
Byomkesh Bakshi is a detective character created by novelist Sharadidnu Bandyopadhyay. This show was leaded by actor Rajat Kapoor. Still now, it is one of the most loved TV detective shows aired in Indian television. Every episode was filled with suspense and thriller and Byomkesh was after finding the truth. This show also bagged several national awards. It was aired in the Doordarshan from the year 1993.
8. Hum Panch
Hum Panch was a simple and fun filled story of Mathur family, a middle class Indian family. Full of hilarious jokes to tickle the funny bone of the Indian television audience in the 90’s, this show was one of the front running TV show on Zee TV at that period. There were five sisters in that Mathur family, each of them having different tastes. Movie star Vidya Balan was also a part of that hit show.
7. Sarabhai vs Sarabhai
This was a saga of battle between a daughter in law and her mother in law in an elite modern Gujarati family. Sarabhai vs Sarabhai managed to gain top TRP ratings during its run. Prominent actors like Rupali Ganguli, Satish Shah, Patna Pathak, Rajesh Kumar, etc acted in this epic TV show aired from the year 2005.
6. Kyonki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi
Kyuki Saas bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi is still considered the mother of all family drama soaps which has been aired in Indian television. This show was a milestone in Indian TV shows as it still has the record of running for the longest period with 1800 episodes. This Star Plus show became a necessity for all the ladies as they could personally relate them to the characters. Smriti Irani played the lead role of the ideal housewife in a Gujarati family. It was produced by Ekta Kapoor.
Khichdi was a popular comedy television show filled with power packed performances. Both audience and the critics loved the jokes and humor of this show. It was about a joint family and their funny day to day life. It was aired in Star Plus from September, 2002 and had 98 episodes. A Bollywood movie named Khichdi – The Movie was also released few years ago based on this hit TV show.
Shaktiman is considered as the first and still the most prominent super hero of Indian television. The 90’s kids could skip their meals to watch the widely popular Shaktiman episodes aired in DoorDarshan every Sunday. Mukhesh Khanna played the dual role an Indian super hero fighting all evils as well as Gangadhar, a news reporter. The character, Geeta Biswas was the lady love of Shaktiman.
This Hindu mythological television show was directed and produced by Ramanand Sagar. It was aired in the Doordarshan from the year 1986. It was the first television show on religious and mythological characters in India. The roles of Lord Rama, Mother Sita and Lord Hanuman were played by Arun Govil, Dipika Chikhalia and Dara Singh respectively.
2. Kaun Banega Crorepati
Kaun Banega Crorepati was the Indian version of the hit UK television quiz show, ‘Who Wants To Be A Millionaire’. This was the first Indian television show having quiz contests and the winner, mostly common men, will take home a million rupees by answering the correct questions. This show was hosted by the mega star Amitabh Bachchan.
R. Chopra produced Mahabharata is the most popular television show that was aired in the Indian television. This epic show became a routine in the Indian households in the Sunday nights. Nitish Bhardwaj played the role of Lord Krishna while the part of Draupadi was played by Roopa Ganguly. With its huge popularity, the show was even aired in UK’s BBC.
